first day of school | technically the end of summer

August 8th, 2011

It’s hard to believe that the summer (well not the summer weather) is over. Today is the first day of school.

In some ways I am just amazed how fast time goes by. Isabella turned 7 on Saturday and today she is starting 2nd grade! I could swear it was just yesterday that we could hold her like a little tiny baby. Now I can’t even carry her to her bed if she falls asleep on the couch!

But as we pulled into the school parking lot this morning, Isabella asked for me to walk her into class – of course I loved that! Gabby and I walked her in, and she put all her things in her little cubby, hung up her back pack and was ready to start the day. My 2nd grader!

Then it was time to drop Gabby off at her classroom. Gabby starts her first day of Pre-K today. Honestly, there is no way this “yittle” girl could possibly be a year shy of kindergarten. Is there? She walked into the class room and several kids yelled out “Gabby!!” A real nice welcome. She settled right in and I made a quick exit.

Another school year begins!

the big night out | fun with the kids

July 19th, 2011

We had a small wedding to photograph at the Phoenician – and fortunately for us and the kids, Grammy was available for the evening. It wasn’t just run of the mill baby sitting - Grammy gave the girls a big night out!

Before Grammy came, the kids had been swimming, I gave them a bath and put them in their nightgowns. But Grammy had big plans. So we changed the girls into beautiful dresses, brushed their hair and they were out the door.

First stop was the local ice cream shop – Randy’s. The girls love it there – I think it has become their spot with Grammy.

Second stop, the nail salon! Big news for Gabby, this was her first time getting a manicure OR pedicure, and she walked out with both. Isabella is a little more experienced, she has had a few pedicures in her day, but it had been a long while.

When we arrived home, the girls were beaming with pride showing off their hands and feet. Isabella had green fingers with white flowers, hot pink toes with flowers. Gabby had day glo pink hands with gold metallic toes with flowers – too cute. They were so excited.

The girls big night out was such a sweet surprise. Have I mentioned lately that I am the luckiest woman in the whole world? Great kids that are so appreciative, an amazing husband and a fantastic family. Thanks mom – you make this parenting thing a bit easier with your never ending support and these fun surprises that put big smiles on my kid’s faces!

the most anticipated play date ever | summer with the kids

July 17th, 2011

When Isabella learned she was finally having a play date with her best friend from school you can’t even imagine how excited she was. The play date was scheduled for Wednesday, but she started preparing on Sunday! She immediately put the play date on her “countdown to her birthday calendar”, so it was official.

Then the preparations began. She is so endearing – making a little gift for her friend (a sachet of chopped basil and cinnamon) then wrapping it up in bright blue tissue paper and writing a little message for her on the outside. She is just in love with this little girl.

She started the countdown when we left summer camp, “ok so what time is she coming?” I said 1pm, but it only said 11:15 on the car’s clock. “That’s forever till 1!” Once we arrived home, the clock said 11:45, she was incredulous that she still had over an haour to go. How could that be?

She sat on the sofa closest to the window so she could see out. “She’s not hear yet!” Apparently her concept of time hasn’t quite developed yet. I texted the mom to check in, she texted back that her little girl had been ready since 5:30am for the play date, dressed and ready to go.

At last, they pulled up. Both Isabella and Gabby ran out the front door to greet her. I barely saw the little girl walk through the front door, the three of them were already in Isabella’s room playing. First, they dressed up in winter clothes and pretended they were ice skaters. Then they had lunch. Then they all appeared in their bathing suits wanting to swim. Off to the pool we went for awhile.

Then, sadly it was time for the play date to end. Needless to say, I haven’t seen Isabella that happy in ages. The beauty of childhood and the simple things that make them happy. Nothing like a good friend and a summer afternoon.

Ice skating in an inferno | summer fun with the kids

July 14th, 2011

coyotes ice den

ice skating

coyotes ice den

I can’t even imagine how much the electric bill must be at the ice skating rink here in the summer. I mean it feels like it is 150 degrees out right now and when you enter that rink it is down right chilly!

I had to search for mittens and sweatshirts when I learned that the kid’s gymnastics summer camp would be taking them ice skating this past Friday. Last time we tried to take Gabby skating I think it was close to 2 years ago. She was having none of it. So this would be her first real time skating – so we figured it would probably be best if we met them at the rink and helped out. Even though Isabella loves to skate, she is still a real beginner too! Oh and I failed to mention that the worst skater in the entire family is me – so I am absolutely no help to Keith!

Gabby happily surprised us by having huge enthusiasm wanting to get on the ice. Keith threw out his lower back trying to keep up, but she gets an A for effort. Isabella was able to use those metal walker type things that they didn’t have when we were little, a bit of cheating, but at least the kids can be out there on their own for  a bit. They had a blast.

And everyone was able to be chilly for an hour or two. Worth the price of admission for sure.

{BUT, my conscience just wishes things like ice skating rinks, grassy lawns, man made lakes and waterfalls would just not be allowed in the desert! Am I crazy?}

lake arrowhead california | travel with the kids

July 5th, 2011

We had such a good time last week on our trip to Lake Arrowhead. Keith had an engagement session at the Lake, with a couple who had met their 10 years ago. Such a cute story, he was a water ski instructor, she was his student. Now, 10 years later, they are about to be married! Photographing the engagement session at Lake Arrowhead was had so much meaning to them.

What a beautiful spot. So serene. Instantly, the kids were enjoying themselves and mommy was relaxed while daddy was off working. We immediately went down by the water, which Gabby referred to as a swamp. I guess living in the desert she doesn’t see to many bodies of water. With the lake being dark in color – the word lake didn’t even cross her mind, it looked like  a swamp! A beautiful swamp in my opinion.

The kids and I sat by the water for hours. They were jumping in and out, playing with the sand, I was reading some trashy English gossip magazine that my sister had so kindly passed along to me. So relaxing. A perfect afternoon.

Lake Arrowhead is such a cute little town. We stayed at Lake Arrowhead Lodge, which was walking distance to town, restaurants, the grocery store and the Lake. So scenic. So American. A little area with rides. A boat ride. Ducks to feed. Waffles to eat. A perfect summer getaway!

Including the ride back. After Isabella was sick from the ride down the mountain (poor thing, she just doesn’t do well with sharp turns), we stopped in Cabazon for Gabby to be in touch with her dinosaurs. Talk about being in her element. We have already toured this (odd, creationist, dinosaurs roamed the earth with humans) museum a few years back. But she still loves to look in the gift shop and just see life size dinosaurs – pure heaven for her!

I don’t think the kids have enjoyed themselves this much ever! A good time was had by all.

selling the house with a dog | the daily grind

July 1st, 2011

The joys of having the house you live in on the market! Any one who has ever sold a house knows how much fun it is to constantly have the house in perfect form, every single day – since you never know when someone is going to give you a call and want to stop by and see it! Well it has been about 3 months, maybe close to 40 views and no offer. But the real joy is keeping your house in perfect order with 2 kids on summer break, one dog and 115 degrees! The kids think it’s fun, the phone rings, realtor says they are on their way over, straighten up really quick, put the kids into the car, throw the dog in the car right along side them (or she would maul anyone who came to look) and head off to kill 15 or 20 minutes! Oh and the really fun part is that since we work from home, work is constantly interrupted!

I guess it’s one way to entertain the kids for the summer!

(P.S. Pooch is in the car seat because (no because her safety is more important than Gabby’s!!) we were staked out at the mall (where we can see when the realtor leaves the house) and the kids were jumping around the car. They were having a blast. Keith and I, not so much.)

road trip to california | family time

June 14th, 2011

So the first of our summer travels started with a road trip from Phoenix to San Francisco and then back to Newport Beach, California then home. Keith was photographing a family in the San Francisco area.  Our goal was to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium the first day and the second day we were to visit with our friends that moved back to the Bay Area after Keith’s portrait session.

The kids were so excited to get to the Aquarium.  Last year, on the same road trip, we did the trip in reverse and ended up arriving in Monterey too late in the day so we had to skip the visit to the Aquarium.  The kids really wanted to visit, so we made it a point to get there this year. The first 1/2 hour was great, the kids were so impressed by the gorgeous displays. Then out of the blue, Gabby seemed to get really tired. Then she rebounded. She ate. She looked around a bit more. She was tired again, just about sleeping on Keith’s shoulder. That just did not seem right. Anyone who knows Miss Gabs has a real appreciation for how much she LOVES animals of all shapes and sizes. She goes at full speed at the zoo, or the aquarium or anywhere else she can view her prized animals. So it was definitely out of character. As the day went on, she started to feel warm. We decided to go back to the room, grab the thermometer and monitor her. She dozed off in the car. We took the temp, it was 101.

Isabella wanted to go to the beach. While Gabs slept, Isabella and I walked down to the beach and Keith stayed in the car with Gabby while she slept. Then he called out to us that the temp went up to 103ish. We tried to find an urgent care, it was 5:59 and of course the only one in Monterey closed at 6pm. So off we go to the ER. I think I forgot to mention that the week before, Keith had strep. So we pretty much knew that was what she had. But anyone who knows me, knows I can’t handle a fever. I want to pass out if either of the kids have a fever over 102. So needless to say, I wanted to get to the ER and get her meds as fast as possible!  The doctor took one look at her throat and told us she had strep. Not shocked.

She was in such good spirits through it all! The bad news was that she could not be around other kids for 24 hours and we were expected to be at our friend’s house the next day. Gabby and I would be hotel bound while Keith and Isabella visited with our friends and their 2 kids. All I could think of was how long till Isabella was sick. Luckily, she never was! I ended up in urgent care on Friday.

We made our way from the Bay area to Newport Beach. We really enjoyed ourselves. We met up with Keith’s mom and stepdad, a friend and her son and my friend from college. The kids really enjoyed the beach, the waves, digging, looking for shells – they loved every minute of being on the beach. The weather was perfect and so was the company!  I can’t wait to return next year!

on the deck at the aquarium

Isabella on the beach while Gabby took her nap

Gabby in the ER waiting for the doctor. Her mood was outstanding!

Pier 39, San Francisco. The kids really wanted to see the sea lions! Alcatraz off in the distance.

Looks like Bella is about to toss Gabby into the water! A few minutes later, Gabby did it to her self. She ran into the water, the tide caught her and she was soaked. And in a really bad mood once she was wet and sandy!!  Shocking, I know. Her moods are so tempered usually. Can you detect my sarcasm?

Daddy on the ride home! Apparently the vacation was just too much. He had to snuggle with Gabby’s Sharky on the drive back from California!

Gabby’s spring concert | school days

May 28th, 2011

Well, the end of the school year is officially here – the Spring Concert! Isabella had her concert on Monday evening – each class had to sing a few patriotic songs for Memorial Day. It was adorable. Miss Gabby’s class had her little concert and kindergarten graduation on Friday morning, standing room only! It is so sweet to see her interact with her classmates, line up for her big performance, smiling and having a laugh. I’m not sure there was one child in her group that remembered all the words to every song, but they did a great job trying! So cute. Priceless!!

decorating easter eggs | quality time with the grandmas

April 13th, 2011

Step 1. Dipping the eggs in the colors

Ava dropping her egg in the bright orange!

I’m shocked that Gabs did not break an egg or spill! I guess there is progress at 4!

The colors have come along way since my day.

Gabs, Isabella and Ava each had a board full of stickers – EXACTLY the same to avoid any potential conflicts.

The finished product. Too cute to eat.

Gabby’s little chick.

A few weeks ago, Martha Stewart Living arrived in our mailbox.  On the cover were some beautiful Easter eggs. Isabella decided then and there that she and Grandma were going to make some gorgeous eggs. As she flipped through the magazine you could see her eyes widen – there were so many ideas for Easter eggs.

So we met Caroline for lunch a week or so ago. Isabella brought her inspiration and asked Grandma when they could make those (cover of the magazine) eggs. A little history, Grandma Caroline actually makes beautiful eggs almost every year – so I’m guessing that’s why Isabella thought to ask her. I don’t think I’m qualified, so I’m glad she didn’t even consider me! But Martha Stewart standards are a little high, especially for a 6 year old!

But Grandma is a good sport. So off to Michael’s she goes to get a ton of supplies to make really adorable eggs. She arrives with an overnight bag full of supplies, hard boiled eggs, raw eggs for blowing out, stickers, Paas decorating kits, ribbon, paint qtips (never saw those before) – all the goodies.

Grammy picked up Ava – she couldn’t miss out on this fun. Gabby was raring to go. Isabella of course wanted to help with everything. Grandma and Grammy set everything up. Keith and I left to go to work. When we returned around midnight, we were greeted by the most adorable selection of Easter Eggs I have ever seen.

My pictures do not do them justice. In a few days I will share Keith’s gorgeous pictures with everyone…well who am I kidding, maybe in time for Easter??? :)

The girls really appreciated the experience. They are so proud of their handiwork. I’m not sure who is going to crack the first egg….they are just way too adorable to eat!

The beginning of a great tradition.

spring break, day 3 | having fun with the kids

March 21st, 2011

For Isabella’s 3rd Christmas, her grandmother gave her this adorable fire truck. The kids just love it. They can barely fit in it any longer, but they still try. They spent a good amount of time the other day pretending to be firefighters and putting out their imaginary fires with the little hose on the back of the truck. Gabby of course had to include her little helpers, a dinosaur, a pink puppy and a tiger.

Spring Break is passing quickly and the kids are having a blast. And believe it or not, I am surviving pretty well!
